Bricked node?

I am attempting to flash Meshtastic on my Heltec V4. I’m using the Meshtastic flasher site and doing a full erase and flash. Everything seems to go smoothly until it appears to time out and get the Network error message in the picture. My V4 won’t boot and all that comes on is a solid white LED. I have tried 3 times with the same results. Is this thing dead or am I missing something?

I saw some videos about this off grid communication stuff and it caught my attention. I'm pretty "apocalypse anxious" so I decided to learn some more just in case. I bought a Wio tracker L1 pro that should get delivered in a couple days. What do I do? Not in the sense of how to use it physically but how to use it socially and in a day to day life. I see some pretty serious setups that people have and wonder what the purpose is. The community seems so nice and I'd love to join, I just feel there will be a lot to learn. Thank you for reading!

Help with planning node

Hello, I'm trying to expand the Meshtastic network in my area, but I live in a valley. I can mount it on the top of my front porch roof which is 12ish ft off of the ground, but I'm not sure what to order to give the best coverage and performance. Should I support GPS? I have backup power, etc. But it seems there are no Meshtastic nodes anywhere near me, so would it even be beneficial to start a node?

Case for a Father’s Day node?

Hey y’all. Putting a handheld node together with a wisblock mini and a 6000mah battery for my dad for Father’s Day. No GPS antenna or any other bells and whistles. Looking for something that’ll look like a (semi) polished case for him. 3d printables are good, but if I don’t have to drag all that stuff out I’d prefer not to. Thanks!

Is there any easy way to keep the ink UI and enable the direct input from the CardKB? I have a build that's 90% done I just need to enable this to finish everything then I can share. I really don't want to have to do a compile from firmware cuz I'll probably screw stuff up lol

Off-gird phone

Hi everyone! This is my first off-gird phone prototype, I used a Motorola Moto E. I deactivated all google play services for added privacy, and installed Meshtastic with other survival, ham radio, SDR, and offline maps apps. Attached to the phone with industrial Velcro is a Heltec v3 with a 915mHz antenna. Also this phone has built in FM radio so, that’s an added bonus feature. This kind of phones can be found for around $25 on eBay, because they’re Tracfone carrier locked, but that’s doesn’t matter for us! So, what do you think?

Also a question, it’s a good idea to use a 12ft coax cable to enhance the range?

Got it replaced in about 15 min. Well turns out my ear buds were connected when I maid this video and the mic is broken. So what I’m saying is that I made a custom power cable that interfaces the solar input to the board. Powering both the USB C input and the 1watt board via its connector. There happens to be a fire today as you can see in the distance. It is a bit scary being up here today surrounded by chaparral bushes! The fire is to the west but because of the smoke you can’t see the ocean.

Lithium Ion batteries in Solar nodes

When I first put this node up here some people warned of using flat pack batteries in an outdoor node.

Well in this upgrade to a 1 watt RAK, I included the temp sensor to keep an eye on actual results.

Well the node is installed and the temps are looking great and well within specs for the battery.

Notable is that the battery is back up to back up battery so it’s never charging or discharging, just standing by. That makes a difference when you’re running hot or cold.

So to data sets here, one is a weather station right next to the node. And the other is the internal box temp and humidity. The on. The ground tests are playing out up here, with the RAK keeping the internal box temp at 7 degrees greater than outside ambient temp.

In the evening this heat load helps create nice 10 to 14 degree gap between dew point and running temp which is great as condensation risk is under control.

The box has a pressure vent…

Power saving on solar node?

Hi. I just got up my solar node.

Heltec V4.31 with 2x3500mah 18650 batteries and a 6v 600mah solar panel.

Bluetooth and wifi are turned off. Is there any reason to turn on power save or it does the same thing, turning off bt and wifi?

Any useful tips for settings would be appreciated!

Looking for parts

Hey everyone!

I'm building a compact LoRa/Meshtastic device (868 MHz) and I'm looking for a specific SMA connector:

- It folds 90° (like a knuckle/hinge joint)
- The base rotates 360° (so the antenna can lay flat at 180°)

Basically a **SMA swivel/knuckle joint** that lets me fold the antenna flush against the enclosure when not in use.

Does anyone know the exact name or reference for this part, and where to reliably buy one? AliExpress, Amazon, or any other source works.

Slow conversation messages via DIY V1

Greetings, I'm new in the Meshtastic world and just built the DIY V1 board.

However, I noticed that the messages are too slow and take around 40 seconds to show in the other device. I use the default option "Long Fast" with the region of EU_433 since I use RX1278 Ra-02 Lora module (433 MHz).

I don't know if it is normal since I used both devices in the same room.

Thoughts on these components for a 1W RAK + Raspberry Pi build?

This is the plan for my upcoming Meshtastic build:

1W Module for LoRa with SX1262 + SKY66122 Booster (RAK13302).
WisMesh Pi HAT (RAK6421) on a Raspberry Pi.
12.8V 10Ah LiFePO4 battery, buck converter 12V to 5V, Victron Smart Battery Sense, and a Shelly relay.

I know the Pi is a power hog compared to a standalone WisBlock, but I'm aiming for a permanent, highly managed base node.

I've seen some posts recently about power issues or voltage drops during 1W transmissions on these boosted RAK modules, I wanted to build something a bit overkill that can easily handle the Tx surge current without breaking a sweat.

Meshtastic in the wild

The nodes are both Heltec T096 and a T114 (not pictured) fitted to my van for range testing. The little stubby antenna still managed a strong signal almost 2 miles away, albeit over very flat and clear land. It's not exactly direct line of sight but it's not far off.

With the backpack node I was calling on LongFast but with no replies. When I got home I noticed one of my messages had managed to hit my base node with 1 hop from 8 miles away. My house is in the city and surrounded by tall buildings, I can lose contact with my base node from just a few streets away and it's pretty much an isolated area for MT. Very surprising to see a message land in such a dense area from so far away.

A few days ago I came across a post asking which antenna to use for Meshtastic. It got me thinking, instead of relying on field tests and trial and error, what if you could actually measure them and know for sure?

So I put together a guide on how to characterize LoRa antennas at 868 MHz using a NanoVNA-H. It covers the full calibration process, Smith chart verification to confirm the calibration is correct, and a practical comparison of three stock antennas that came bundled with different kits I've picked up over time.
