It has become a tradition as it was when we were growing up. She has a similar experience with these shows as me. Every Friday my little brother and I would walk to Osco Drug after school and load up on candy to watch the shows in our basement. Sometimes we’d have friends sleeping over, sometimes just the two of us with a bowl of candy. What a wonderful memory and it is a fun little nostalgia trip to do now.

Edit: I’m really not losing it, I swear! but I mixed up the name with the name of the restaurant!!! The series was TGIF (Thank God It’s Funny/Friday). My bad.

Went in with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. Will probably go see it again. It would suck for this movie to flop because poor turnout. It was very good and there’s a lot of throwback to the cartoon. Do yourself a favor and go see it!

Who else got hit by the “Satanic Panic”?

I remember having to watch a bunch of religious special reports on kids committing suicide after being possessed by the devil because of their music, games, or comic books. Mom made me throw out all of my comic cards because she saw a picture of Carnage (the Marvel villain) on one of them*. I wasn’t allowed to see Disney’s Hercules in theaters when it came out because the bad guy was “the Devil” (try explaining to a hyper-religious parent the difference between Greek myth and devil worship if you ever want to give yourself a headache). Adults would sit around and tell stories about some new way that Satan was getting inside children, and then the next day, something else would be banned in the house. It really was insanity.

Anyone else have any memories of this time? What were some of your favorite overreactions?

*I was allowed to read X-Men comics though, because I showed my mom the episode of the X-Men cartoon where Nightcrawler convinces Wolverine to give his life to Christ. My eternal gratitude goes to the creators of that episode, which seems like it was made explicitly for parents dealing with Satanic panic.

Rookie of the Year is on Netflix

I don't know when they added it, but it's the #4 kids' movie today, so now I've got to watch it. This fits into the category of "movies we taped off HBO and then watched way too many times in the summer because there was nothing else to do."

What were your favorite sports movies of childhood? Mine were Bad News Bears, The Mighty Ducks, The Sandlot, Little Giants, Angels in the Outfield... and okay, I'll admit it, the sequel Bad News Bears Breaking Training, which I recently watched as an adult and realized is a pretty terrible movie on every level. But come on, how could a kid not love thousands of people chanting "LET THEM PLAY" in the Astrodome, and this shining gem of 70s musical brilliance?

My daughter asked me how popular Michael Jackson was. How would you describe this to a 10 year-old?

She asked me if they were comparable to KATSEYE and my wife had to laugh. I said that it was more like Taylor Swift, but even she doesn’t come close to how saturated the market was with everything Michael Jackson. I guess it’s mostly due to the lack of media channels we had back then.

PS Her next question made my wife laugh even harder, “Could he dance?”.

What are you all doing with the heirloom stuff that your grandparents and parents are leaving to you? I'm talking china, silver sets, crystal / fancy serving dishes, goblets and such. Will anyone take this? I am realizing that I don't need it and will never use it, but unfortunately finding myself in a situation where because I'm a sentimental sucker, it's accumulated. Everywhere.

Caregiver Check-in

that’s it really - checking in with all those looking after their parents in some capacity. make sure you take care of yourself.

after 24+ years in their house, we sold it and moved them to an apt complex closer to my brother but after my mom ended up in the hospital, (she’s better/ish), we moved them to a retirement community that has three levels of care (independent, assisted, memory). unfortunately it looks like we might be moving my dad to memory care. my brother and i divide and conquer. he’s in state and close enough to check in on them and im a phone call away and the main point of contact - the first thing we did, after shredding boxes upon boxes worth of papers, was a change of address so i get all their mail (it’s all donation solicitations) and put everything on autopay. we also added our names to their bank accounts (easier than lying) i also created logins for soc sec admin, irs, and hospital portals.

we got this.
