Introducing Claude Fable 5

Introducing Claude Fable 5: a Mythos-class model that we've made safe for general use. Its capabilities exceed those of any model we've ever made generally available.

Fable 5 is state of the art on nearly all tested benchmarks, with exceptional performance in software engineering, knowledge work, scientific research, and vision. It can run for days, and the longer the task, the larger its lead over our other models.

Fable 5 launches today alongside Claude Mythos 5. The two share the same underlying model, but Mythos 5, so far deployed only through Project Glasswing, has the safeguards lifted in some areas. The safeguards are what distinguish the two, and why we've given them different names.

Releasing a model this capable comes with risks. Without safeguards, Fable 5's capabilities in areas like cybersecurity could be misused to cause serious damage. So when Fable's classifiers detect a request related to cybersecurity, biology and chemistry, or distillation, the response is handled by Claude Opus 4.8, our next-most-capable model. Users are informed whenever this occurs, more than 95% of sessions involve no fallback at all, and performance everywhere else is unaffected. We'll keep refining the safeguards to reduce false positives.

Claude Fable 5 is available today on paid plans, in Claude Code, on the Claude API, and all major cloud platforms. Through June 22, it's included in paid Claude plans at no additional cost.

Claude Mythos 5 is available to Glasswing partners, with a broader trusted access program to follow.

Claude Fable 5 feels less like a model launch and more like a preview of AI inequality

Anthropic just released Claude Fable 5, and I think the real story is not “new model better at coding.”

The real story is that frontier AI is turning into a gated utility.

Public users get Fable 5, but with heavy safety routing. If the system thinks your request touches cyber, bio, chemistry, or distillation, it can kick you down to Opus 4.8. Meanwhile, selected partners get Mythos 5, which is basically the same underlying model with some safeguards lifted.

So the public gets the “safe” version. Trusted institutions get the dangerous/useful version.

I understand why they’re doing it. Nobody wants open access to a model that can materially improve cyberattack capability. Fine. But let’s stop pretending this is just a normal product release. This is the beginning of a two-tier AI world:

one model for regular users,

another model for governments, big companies, approved labs, and people inside the trust circle.

Also, the subscription thing is messy. Fable 5 is included for paid plans only until June 22, then it moves to usage credits unless they have enough capacity. That tells me the economics are still ugly. These companies want everyone dependent on agents, but the best agents may be too expensive to give to normal users at normal subscription prices.

My unpopular take: the next AI monopoly won’t just be about who has the smartest model. It’ll be about who gets access to the uncapped version.

Everyone else gets the child-safe demo.

Fable is blowing my mind

We are back in business, it burns through my tokens like there is no tomorrow but damn it is good. It is blowing my mind in how it can oneshot anything I throw at it. Just as a giggle and test I wasted my tokens on oneshotting an incremental game including 3d visuals and audio, a full webapp with tons of functionality and admin dashboards. It did all of it in 16 mins without errors, without bugs. This is a cocaine dealer that will remove this power in 2 weeks and I don't like it. No yapping, no nothing, just straight powerhouse making me scared for my future.

Claude Fable 5 dropped today and already beat Pokémon FireRed with vision alone 🤯

Just raw game screenshots. No minimap, no coordinates, no memory hacks, no external tools. Previous versions needed a custom harness to even attempt this. Fable 5 did the whole game end-to-end.

Insane jump in vision and long-horizon reasoning on day one.

Fable feels like a mature, calm, and down to earth programmer - Very impressive

I just got Fable 5 to solve a bug on a platform I am working on, one that Opus has been struggling with, and I am so impressed. I gave it the same, clear, short and to the point prompt as I always do and there is a noticable difference in how it goes to work. A few observations:

Fable doesnt talk much. It is very short and to the point in it's messaging
It's able to work much more autonomously. It ran tests in a structured way, problem solved looking for evidence, and worked precisely trough the issue.
It occasionally reported issues it found, but in a calm and short manner. Only factual, no long essay like Opus somtimes tends to do.
Once finished, it warned for future issues that potentially could pop up that are not directly related to the bug it fixed. It showed the ability to understand context beyond what Opus does. To quote: "One caveat: this type of breakage can recur if Vercel raises the bar for datacenter IPs or for headless Chrome generally. If it does, the logs will now show the real reason."
Then once it pushed the fix live, it went: "One small observation from the box, not touched: there's a stray untracked REDACTED directory in REDACTED— it looks like something once built that path relative to the wrong working directory (likely the logo downloader running with cwd at the repo root). Harmless, but if you see logos failing to display after a customer sets up their profile someday, that path bug is a place to look.

All in all I am impressed. I am on Claude Max 5x, it did use 20% of my 5 hour window in 1 prompt. So yes, it is really good, but use it wisely.

Claude code running remote via webui keeps flagging its own outputs on auto-mode, attempting to mention this causes more blocks.

What the hell did they do to Fable? zero issues with 4.6, 4.7 and 4.8 on the same prompt chain.

Fable 5 is insanely good but watch your usage, I was burning 2% a minute on 20x

Been playing with Fable 5 since it dropped this morning and the model is genuinely a step up. But holy hell, the burn rate.

I'm on the Max 20x plan and during a heavier session I was watching my usage tick up roughly 2% per minute. Not per hour. Per minute. A long agentic session would chew through the entire window before lunch. For context I never came close to hitting limits with Opus 4.8 doing the same kind of work.

Then I looked at the API pricing and it makes sense. Fable 5 is $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output. That's exactly double Opus 4.8 ($5/$25). And the thing is, the cost isn't just the rate card. These reasoning-heavy models think longer and generate way more tokens per request, so the effective cost per task multiplies even further.

Run the numbers on an enterprise deployment and it gets crazy fast. One "question" to an agentic system isn't one completion, it's a planning pass, a bunch of sub-agent calls, tool use loops, retries, self-verification. A single complex request can easily fan out into tens of millions of tokens. At $50/M output, companies are going to see four-figure bills for what looks like one query to the end user. Uber reportedly blew through their annual AI budget in four months and that was before this tier existed.

Not complaining exactly, the capability is real and for hard problems it's probably worth it. But the era of treating frontier models like a flat-rate utility is over. Cost-aware routing (cheap model by default, Fable only when it actually matters) just went from nice-to-have to mandatory.

Anyone else on a Max plan seeing similar burn? Curious what usage looks like for people running it in Claude Code all day.

Rumor: Anthropic Planning to Release Public Version of Claude Mythos Tomorrow (with Guardrails)

According to tech journalist Alex Heath (Sources newsletter), Anthropic is planning to release a public version of Mythos tomorrow.

Key details from the report:
• It will include substantial guardrails, notably not as cyber-permissive as the restricted preview used by Project Glasswing partners.

• Expected to be dramatically better at long-horizon, multi-turn tasks and agentic work.

Background on Mythos:

Fable made this launch video for my app

Hi all,

I’m building Daydream, a video editor that uses Claude Code/Codex. Just like everyone else, I’ve been eagerly anticipating testing out Fable with different use cases to see what it can do. Especially as it pertains to video editing/motion graphics.

After a couple hours of tinkering, I have to say that I’m pretty impressed with Fable's output. There’s no real footage in this video, all of animations/zooms/UI/graphics are created entirely using Fable with Daydream. Fable even picked and downloaded the music from a commercial free site for the video haha. Excited to keep playing around with it.

Fable is significantly cheaper than opus

I don't need to spend an hour prodding it to get it to do something for it to make 10 mistakes and have to redo it 3 times when bugs come up. I am using at least half as many tokens before.

It's cost per token for actually functional code, not overall cost.

I am going to hate when they remove it from the sub.
